What is the difference between a venue coordinator and a wedding planner?

A venue coordinator works for the venue and a wedding coordinator works for the couple. A venue coordinator operates on behalf of the venue, food service, setting up, staff and all other aspects of the venue. A wedding planner is there to oversee the set up of all vendors, answer questions, solve any problems that may arise, and make sure that everything is exactly as the couple wants it.

How early should couples start planning their wedding? Hire a wedding planner?

Anywhere from 9-12 months prior to the wedding date. You don't want to wait until the last minute and become overwhelmed, nor do you want to be planning for a really long time. I do recommend you hire a wedding coordinator soon as you decide on a date even if it's for the day of Coordination package. This way, you can get the contract signed and ensure your wedding planner is available on your date.
